Michelangelo Pistoletto is one of the most influential contemporary artists of the past century and a founding figure of the Arte Povera movement. Internationally acclaimed, his work redefines the relationship between art, society, and transformation, engaging with political, environmental, and social issues.
Emerging in the 1960s, he gained global recognition for his “Mirror Paintings,” which use reflective surfaces to involve the viewer and dissolve the boundary between artwork and observer. As a leading voice in Arte Povera, he challenged consumerism and industrial culture, promoting simplicity, material authenticity, and conceptual depth. His practice later evolved into a broader vision of art as a driver of social change.
In 1998, he founded Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, a laboratory connecting art with fields such as economics, education, politics, and sustainability. Through the concept of the “Third Paradise,” he proposed a balance between nature and artificiality as a path toward a more sustainable future.
Awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale, Pistoletto’s work is exhibited worldwide. For him, art is not only expression, but a responsibility and a tool to shape a more conscious and regenerative society.
