Maria Alessandra Gallone is President of ISPRA, one of Italy’s principal public bodies dedicated to environmental monitoring, scientific research and technical support for environmental policy. She assumed office in February 2026 following her appointment by the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security.
Born in Bergamo in 1966, she graduated in Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University of Bergamo and qualified as a teacher before beginning a long institutional career at both local and national level.
She served as Senator of the Italian Republic for two legislatures, working on key parliamentary committees including Environment, Justice and Agriculture, as well as the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Environmental Crimes. In recent years, she also served as Advisor to the Minister of University and Research and as expert for the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, contributing to initiatives aimed at strengthening the relationship between research, innovation and territorial development.
As President of ISPRA, she leads the institution during a crucial phase for Italian environmental governance, with a focus on reinforcing the role of science and public research in addressing climate change, hydrogeological instability, water scarcity, soil consumption and biodiversity conservation.
