Bill de Blasio is an American public leader and former Mayor of New York City, widely recognised for advancing climate action, social equity, and inclusive urban development at scale. As the leader of one of the world’s most influential cities, he placed sustainability and climate resilience at the centre of urban governance, while linking environmental policy to social and economic opportunity.
During his mayoralty, he launched the landmark OneNYC strategy, an integrated vision combining climate action, resilience, equity, and inclusive growth. Under his leadership, New York City committed to carbon neutrality, introduced stringent building emissions regulations, expanded renewable energy procurement, and divested public funds from fossil fuels. He also strengthened coastal protection and adaptation measures to address rising sea levels and extreme weather risks.
Alongside climate policy, de Blasio advanced a broad social agenda, including universal pre-kindergarten education, large-scale affordable housing programs, and green workforce initiatives, reinforcing the principle that climate action and social justice are deeply interconnected.
Before serving as mayor, he was New York City Public Advocate (2010–2013) and held senior roles in both city and federal government, including during the Clinton Administration, where he focused on equity, transparency, and community-driven policy solutions.
Today, de Blasio remains an active voice in global discussions on urban governance and climate resilience. His work continues to highlight the role of cities as frontline actors in the climate transition, demonstrating how ambitious environmental policy can be aligned with inclusive economic development and stronger, more resilient communities.
