Fabrizio Pilo

Fabrizio Pilo is Full Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Cagliari, where he currently serves as Vice Rector for Regional Affairs and Innovation. Previously, he led the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering for twelve years. He holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cagliari (with honors) and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pisa.

He is a highly cited researcher, author or co-author of over 200 scientific publications, and is ranked among the top 2% most influential researchers globally according to the Stanford ranking. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a CIGRE Distinguished Member.

Pilo has coordinated and continues to coordinate European, national, and international research projects focused on energy distribution systems, smart grids, distributed energy resources, and renewable energy integration. He holds key leadership roles in several international organizations, including Vice Chair of the NEST Foundation (Italian Energy Consortium – PNRR PE2), member of the Board of ENSIEL, Chair of CIRED Technical Committee, and Coordinator of ISGAN (IEA) Working Group 3 on Cost-Benefit Analysis of Smart Grids. He also chairs CEI Technical Committee 316.

He has served as advisor and evaluator for national and international institutions, including ARERA, CSEA, the European Commission, and multiple ministries and regional governments. He has also collaborated with major energy companies and research institutions such as ENEL, EDF, CESI, ENEA, CNR, and RSE. Since 2023, he has been a member of the Technical and Scientific Committee of RSE S.p.A.

His research focuses on energy system planning and management, electrification of energy end-uses, electric mobility, and the economic evaluation of energy investments. In 2008, he co-founded the spin-off RESPECT Srl, further bridging academic research and industrial application.
