Luca Mercalli is an Italian climatologist, science communicator, and one of the country’s leading voices on climate change, environmental awareness, and sustainable living. He currently serves as president of the Società Meteorologica Italiana, an institution founded in 1865, and has dedicated his career to bridging scientific research with public understanding.
Trained in climatology and alpine studies, Mercalli has conducted extensive research on Alpine glaciers, climate history, and the environmental transformations affecting mountain ecosystems. Alongside his scientific work, he has become widely recognised for his role in bringing climate science into mainstream public discourse through television, publishing, and educational outreach.
Over the past two decades, Mercalli has become a familiar presence in Italian media through programmes such as Che tempo che fa and Scala Mercalli, where he has consistently advocated for evidence-based climate action and ecological responsibility. His communication style combines scientific rigour with accessibility, helping broaden public awareness of the climate crisis and its social implications.
He is the author of several influential books, including Preparamoci and Non c’è più tempo, both of which explore the urgency of environmental transition and the need to rethink contemporary models of consumption and development.
Through research, public engagement, and advocacy, Mercalli continues to promote a vision of sustainability grounded in scientific knowledge, collective responsibility, and long-term resilience.
