Mario Sprovieri earned his PhD in Geochemistry from the University of Palermo in 1997 and has developed a distinguished scientific career in the fields of oceanography, paleoceanography and environmental sciences. He is currently Director of the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council (ISMAR-CNR).
Over the years, he has served as researcher and adjunct professor at several Italian academic institutions, including the University of Palermo and the Parthenope University of Naples. He has also been visiting scientist at the Southampton Oceanography Centre and the University of Barcelona, expanding his expertise in analytical techniques and environmental data modeling.
From 2018 to 2020 he served as Acting Director of the Institute for the Study of Anthropogenic Impacts and Sustainability (IAS-CNR). Throughout his career, he has coordinated and participated in numerous European and international research programmes, including FP6, FP7 and Horizon 2020 projects focused on marine sciences, climate systems and environmental sustainability.
Sprovieri has coordinated major national initiatives dedicated to marine hazards, offshore impacts and climate-related environmental monitoring, while also leading several oceanographic expeditions in the Mediterranean as chief scientist.
Author of more than 200 scientific publications, he has contributed extensively to research in paleoceanography, stratigraphy and environmental sciences. He is editor and associate editor for several international scientific journals and actively participates in institutional committees related to environmental policy and marine research.
