Roberto Danovaro

Roberto Danovaro is Full Professor of Marine Biology and Ecology at Università Politecnica delle Marche, where he has held a full professorship since 2001. From 2013 to 2022 he served as President of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, one of Europe’s leading institutions for marine biology, ecology and biotechnology research.

Over the course of his career, he has held prominent roles within the international scientific community, serving as President of the Italian Society of Ecology, the Italian Society of Limnology and Oceanography, and the European Federation of Scientific Societies. He is currently President of the Scientific Council of WWF Italia and member of international scientific panels including IUCN, UNEP and the EU Academy of Science. He is also a member of Academia Europaea.

Danovaro has coordinated numerous European and international research programmes and is author or co-author of more than 500 scientific papers and several books. His research activity focuses on marine biodiversity, deep-sea ecology, ecosystem functioning and the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems.

ExpertScape recognized him as the world’s most influential scientist in Ocean and Seas and Marine Biology for the decade 2010–2020. Among the awards he has received are the BMC Biology Prize, the Award of the French Society of Oceanography and the ENI Award for Environmental Protection.
